Monadnock Institute for Community Advancement and Sustainability (MICAS) was founded in January of 2005 to support long-term planning for community and regional sustainability in the context of resource depletion and climate change. The purpose of MICAS is to network and build community coalitions to address a broad range of sustainability issues -- social, economic, environmental and energy-related. Our long-range plans include community asset mapping, a community internet portal, an educational network, and community planning forums.
MICAS exists to support our regional communities to become healthy and sustainable socially, economically, environmentally, and in energy use. We accomplish this through:
Sharing information, resources, opportunities and educational courses through existing social networks and the internet;
Supporting the development of community-based coalitions with strong citizen involvement;
Coordinating community-wide discussions, collaboratives, and planning sessions;
Developing programs to facilitate communication, dialogue, collaboration, planetary citizenship, and empowerment;
Building capacity for local community-building organizations and initiatives;
Involving youth in futures thinking, planning, and entrepreneurial projects;
Supporting the development of locally sustainable economic practices; and
Helping our community talk back to itself through video, audio, internet, art and print media creation and archiving.
